What We Heard
In 2022 and 2025, the project team held two separate phases of outreach for the Berkeley Bike Plan Update. In total, the team held 25 events, held interviews with residents with a disability, launched an interactive webmap, received over 100 emails and letters, and presented to City commissions on three separate occasions. Throughout this process, we prioritized hearing the voices of low-income residents in Berkeley’s Equity Priority Areas.
We got input from over 1,500 residents and collected almost 2,000 comments about how we should make Berkeley a better place to bike and roll. Here’s what we heard:
-
Most comments focused on safety concerns about today’s streets
-
A third of comments focused on improving safety at major intersections
-
A third of comments focused on improving the quality of the bicycle network
-
10% of comments prioritized pavement quality and maintenance
You can review individual comments from the public in our comment matrix. The map below shows how often comments identified a particular street or intersection.
This public input directly informed network recommendations in the Draft Plan. Our recommendations are driven by the following focus areas:
-
Create a connected network
-
Balance parking loss & loading challenges
-
Apply Universal Design principles, ensuring access for people with a disability
-
Prioritize bike network facilities that can accommodate more types of devices (like scooters & other mobility devices)
-
Create safe routes to schools across Berkeley
